Portraits of beautiful tattooed women

Senju started tattooing in 1991, under his Swedish birth name Matti. In the year 2000, he decided to fully dedicate his time and energy exploring and mastering the traditional Japanese tattoo – Irezumi. He now adopted the title Horimatsu, and began a journey of constant and ever deepening studies of Japanese culture, history and religion. After 24 years of dedication, he has come to the realisation that the more he knows and understand, the more there is to learn. It is truly a journey of a lifetime.

In 2009, he received the artist name Senju from a legendary Japanese Irezumi master. It sparked in him a desire to broaden his practice of traditional Japanese tattooing through various mediums like photography, designing and publishing books as well as painting.

For more than a decade, he has explored traditional Japanese art themes like the erotic art of Shunga, Nihonga, and Japanese ghosts, only to arrive back where he once began his journey – the traditional Japanese art and craft of Irezumi.

His current and ongoing project is titled ”Irezumi Bijinga (portraits of beautiful tattooed women), in which he explores the roots as well as the future of Irezumi. He concentrating on designing for the female body, searching for new ways of telling old stories on traditional themes from Japanese history and myth, in constant search for the ultimate when it comes to expression and how the tattoo fits the individual body.
